FF - Toby West's Ebony & Ivory

Hi there, Everyone!

Time for Flashback Friday again so thought since I was on the subject of Toby West yesterday, I would finish the week with his own home that was featured in Veranda magazine back in 2000.

In what Toby described as an "elegant bungalow", he has kept with the ebony and ivory theme throughout the house - with tone on tone ivory papered walls accented with the beautiful ebony antiques.

When I first saw this house at the time of publication, it stood out in my mind as one of the most perfectly arranged homes I had ever seen.  It appears small, although I don't know what the square footage is - it could actually be quite large (there are a lot of rooms, as you will see), but the important thing is the rooms are cosy, quaint, charming and very livable.  Totally unforgettable, frankly.

Enjoy!

One more note of interest about Toby West's designs.  If any of you watched Chrisley Knows Best last year and admired their beautiful Atlanta home, I just found out yesterday that Toby West was the designer.  If you would like to see more of that, go here.

Have a great weekend!

Peacock House

Just imagine arriving home to this 11-acre compound in Americus, Georgia, and being greeted by your pet peacocks between rows of potted blue hydrangeas.  Idyllic, wouldn't you say?

This is the well-planned life of nonagenarian Furlow Gatewood who has been collecting antiques since he was a young boy.

With his keen eye and amazing imagination, he constructed Peacock House from a dirt floored greenhouse because he happened to pick up two Gothic columns from a Georgia flea market and didn't know what else to do with them, so proceeded to build Peacock House in order to utilize the columns.  He has a carpenter who builds Furlow's visions and a lady 'down the road' who sews his cushions from scraps of fabrics he picks up here and there.  This house is now a guest house on his 5 house compound (although no one has ever slept there).

I would say that Furlow's life is definitely 'a life well lived' as he has spent his life since childhood gathering, collecting, building and enjoying.......and all with impeccable style.

Italian greyhound, Phillip, one of Furlow's four beloved dogs sitting in front of a 17th century Italian table and under a 19th century Dutch brass chandelier.  And I presume those are the two Gothic columns that the house was built to accommodate.

Living room with white washed plank floors and walls.

 Foyer with painted floors.

Guest room which has never been slept in.

Love this sunroom and the mix of furnishings.

Next Tuesday, I will share one of his other cottages.  But, in the meantime, to see more of this self-taught designer's amazing style and antique collections, you must pick up his book shown below.  I got it for my birthday last winter and it's a virtual treasure trove of all of his houses.

TBT - North Carolina Beauty

This is the home of Gastonia, North Carolina designer, Nancy Taylor Lynch.  As you will see, she has a definite love of color and the home is full of a pretty mix of chintz, ginghams, dog art and antiques......so warm, colorful and charming.

The kitchen window treatments caught my eye at the time and is probably what prompted me to tear out the article, although I really loved the whole house.   Some of you may recognize the kitchen from Pinterest.  Now you know whose house it belongs to.

Enjoy and have a great day!

Donald Kirkby Vignettes

Hi there,

Thought you might enjoy some antique vignettes for a change.

Donald Kirkby is an international interior designer, antique dealer and editorial stylist living in British Columbia and has an amazing eye for original finds and vignettes.  Many of the items in the images below are for sale and you can see more of his items here.

I have some tearouts from some older magazines of more of his work, which I will try and post on Throwback Thursday.

Enjoy!
